Star Wars Bedroom Decor Ideas - Boy's Room Makeover

Our middle boy has always been a massive Star Wars fan so when it came to his bedroom makeover, he was really excited to have a Star Wars themed room!

When I'm decorating a child's room, I like to make sure that the room will grow with them so I don't generally like to go too 'theme-y'. For our son's room, I really wanted to find ways of incorporating Star Wars decor in a way that could be easily changed when he got a bit older if he grew out of the Star Wars theme. Today, I'll be sharing some great, affordable Star Wars bedroom ideas that can be easily adapted as your child grows and they want to update their bedroom decor.

The design and colour scheme

Before

Our house is Edwardian and the previous owner had lived here for over 50 years. This room hadn't been refreshed in a long time - it still had its green carpet and pink curtains, definitely not the look our little boy wanted! It was in desperate need of a full redesign. 

I wanted to give this new room a classic, traditional feel with contemporary elements, in keeping with the rest of our home. I decided on a simple colour scheme of red, white and blue which was perfect to tie in with my boy's love of Star Wars.

I wanted the space to feel calming so for the wall colour, I chose Skylight by Farrow & Ball - a lovely pale blue-grey - with the woodwork in Slipper Satin. While it's great for a little boy's room, it's also sophisticated enough to work in an older child's bedroom. I then incorporated contrasting reds as accents to bring the room to life.

We have restored the floorboards throughout our home and we did the same in this room, painting the floor in the same white colour as the woodwork. This is one of the best things you can do to make a room feel lighter.

Star Wars Wall Art

Large wall prints are a fun way of adding personality to a room. I found some giant posters featuring Yoda, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in scenes from Star Wars films. I put them in black frames, positioning them on the wall opposite the bed. Because they’re so big, I asked the framer to use acrylic rather than glass for safety reasons. Star Wars wall stickers

Wall decals are a great way of adding personality to a kid's room. I found these Star Wars quote stickers on eBay and they make a great focal point positioned above the bed. A big plus point is that they're easily removable for when you want to give the room a fresh new look.

The red, white and blue rug was from John Lewis and is in a striped pattern, which ties in with the roman blind.

Star patterns

Rather than going for soft furnishings with an obvious Star Wars theme, I introduced lots of star patterns throughout the room as a nod to it. Instead of Star Wars bedding, I chose a grey star patterned duvet cover set from H&M and I added a bright red throw and cushion in the same pattern as accents.

Star Wars Toys in the Decor Pieces

As well as Lego, I sourced a cute Yoda complete with light saber which we displayed on the tall open shelving unit.

Another great idea is to hang your child's light sabers on the wall using wall mounts.

Star Wars Lego 

Kill two birds with one stone - get some Star Wars themed lego as a birthday present. It will keep your little one busy and when it's finished, it can be hung from the ceiling! So far, as part of our Lego Star Wars hanging collection, we've got a Millennium Falcon, a Tie Fighter, a Light Cruiser and an X Wing. We wrapped garden wire around them and hung them from hooks screwed into the ceiling. We've also displayed other Star Wars lego models on the windowsill.

Star Wars Themed Lighting

Although I stuck to non-themed lighting with the ceiling, wall and desk lamps, there are lots of great Star Wars themed mood lights available to buy. The Star Wars Icon Flow Lamp from Glow would be perfect as a night light or try the Menkind Darth Vader Light Saber Desk Lamp, currently available at Debenhams, to create a sleepy soft glow at bedtimes.

Using a darker blue colour in the alcove behind the desk adds depth to the room The vintage desk was a £60 eBay find!
