Coastal Kids' Room Reveal: A Fun Beach-Themed Space
There are lots of easy and affordable ways of adding fun coastal style to a child's bedroom. Whether you're looking to inject a bit of seaside charm or create a laid-back, beachy atmosphere, there are so many design touches that can make a big difference. Today, I’m excited to share the final reveal of the kids’ bedroom at the North Wales coastal home - it’s full of interior design ideas perfect for creating a beach-themed bedroom that works brilliantly for both boys and girls.
The Interior Design Scheme
Before - during the clear-out phase
This house was built in the 1950s and it holds a lot of sentimental value to me and my family. You can read all about its history in a previous post here. When it came to designing the children's bedroom, we were really keen to add plenty of personality to the space. The goal was to transform it into a fun and relaxing area, one that would be perfect for the grandchildren during their visits and also work well for AirBnb guests. This meant the room needed to have a welcoming feel while being practical for short stays.
I've already shared the reveals of the master and second bedrooms in the house, so it was important to ensure this children's bedroom design worked seamlessly with those and didn’t feel out of place. I wanted it to flow nicely while still having its own distinct look.
Detailed Design Board
The Layout
Because the room is on the smaller side, we had to get a bit creative with how to make the most of the space. A bunk bed was the obvious choice – not only does it look great, but it’s also the best option for maximising the available space. Plus, it was a very popular decision with the kids! We had the radiator relocated to the opposite side of the room (under the window), which opened up a bit more room for the bed. Since the room is used mostly for occasional visits, we didn’t need a huge amount of storage for clothes. I kept it simple with a chest of drawers and a small wardrobe, just enough to keep things neat and tidy while still being practical.
Colour Scheme
After
When it came to the colour scheme, I wanted to avoid a stereotypical coastal look with white walls and bold blue or red accents, which can sometimes feel a bit overdone. Instead, I decided to keep the walls in a neutral tone for a soft and airy feel, which also helped to make sure it would appeal to both boys and girls. After testing several paint samples, we settled on Pebble Shore by Dulux – it’s a lovely, soft neutral that lies somewhere between beige and grey. It creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a children’s room.
To balance the soft walls, I opted for black and white bedding with a geometric pattern. This adds a bit of contrast and gives the room a relaxed, Scandi vibe that complements the coastal theme. For a playful touch, I incorporated vibrant pops of colour with light teal and mustard accents. These small bursts of colour help bring energy to the room, while the black accents help it feel grounded.
Natural materials
A great way of bringing a coastal vibe into a space is by using natural materials. I made sure to include plenty of wood and rattan tones to add texture and warmth to the room. A rattan pendant light was the perfect choice for this, adding both style and a bit of extra warmth. I also incorporated a rattan belly basket as a plant pot for a natural feel and to bring the outside in.
The teak chest of drawers was one of my absolute favourite finds during the entire house renovation! It was a real bargain at just £60 on eBay, and it was already painted in the perfect colour for the room – a lovely warm wood tone that ties in beautifully with the other natural materials. It’s also a mid-century piece, which works perfectly with the 1950s era of the house. This is the focal point of the room and is styled with a table lamp for reading, along with a quirky light-up cactus as a nightlight. These different light sources help to create a cosy atmosphere at bedtime.
Instead of opting for a deep-pile carpet, I chose a Berber-style rug in a warm mushroom colour for the entire first floor. This adds a lovely soft texture underfoot while still enhancing the coastal feel of the room. I added a woolly sheep rug as a subtle nod to the surrounding countryside. It gives the room a lovely sense of warmth and cosiness.
Nautical Decor
When you’re creating a coastal space, there’s no better way to bring the theme to life than by using a few key nautical elements. I chose coordinating wall decor that features beach-inspired touches, like the hanging sign above the bed, which adds a sense of adventure.
One of my favourite pieces is the beach hut wardrobe from La Redoute - it's the perfect size for a children’s room and works so well for short stays. The soft teal colour of the camper van wall hanging ties in beautifully with the overall colour scheme, and the palm tree detailing just adds to that laid-back, holiday feel. The yellow kite brings a playful, child-like element to the room, making it feel fun and whimsical.
The cute wall shelves echo the beach hut shape of the wardrobe and help to add more splashes of colour. I introduced bunting to the room to add that extra playful, beachy vibe, evoking the feel of seaside fairs and long summer days at the seaside.
This room really has become the perfect children's bedroom for a coastal getaway – it’s playful, relaxing and full of fun details. I hope you’ve found these coastal bedroom ideas helpful - I’d love to hear what you think!
