Edwardian Semi Hallway - Final Reveal
A few weeks ago, I showed you the final reveal of the living room in an Edwardian Semi in Halifax that I worked on last year. Today, I’m excited to share the final reveal of the lovely hallway!
Before
This room had lots of beautiful original features like the doors, panelling and spindles but they didn’t really stand out. Quite often, I like to go dark in period hallways to create a dramatic entrance and to make the rooms coming off it appear lighter. But this hallway didn’t feel like it should be dark. It’s a large space and has both south and west facing windows so it gets lots of natural light throughout the day. The dining room and lounge are painted in strong colours too (you can just spy the dining room on the left painted in Oval Room Blue by Farrow and Ball) so there wouldn’t have been much light and dark contrast between spaces.
The Interior Design Scheme
After exploring colour options, we decided on Misted Green, a calming pale green by Benjamin Moore, for the walls. We chose Soot, a very dark blue (nearly black) for the woodwork to make the lovely features stand out.
Before
Look at the beautifully shaped spindles and the lovely original panelling!
After
See how the shape of the spindles is highlighted with the dark paint against the light walls?
The stair runner from Stair Runners Direct looks great with the black stair rods and we had it whipped in pale pink along the edges to provide contrast.
The original Edwardian front door had been panelled over at some point. The clients were a bit nervous about removing it because they didn’t know what state it would be in underneath and whether the original beading had been removed.
But they went for it and it definitely paid off! Beading still in tact.
Before
We got rid of the giant clock which the clients had never really been big fans of - they just felt like they needed something big to fill the space.
And we replaced it with this beautiful art work - it’s a print of one of Claire Murray’s paintings. I’ve spoken about Claire’s work in a previous blog post. The blues and greens in the painting here complement the wall and woodwork colours while the yellows pick out the colour of the gold chairs. The pink provides contrast and ties in with the stair runner and accent colours in the lounge. Perfect!
Before
This area was previously used to store coats so we moved the coats out of the way to the cupboard under the stairs.
And we added this little seating area - perfect as an extra breakout space when the clients have parties and gatherings.
The restored cast iron radiator is another by Vintage Cast Iron Radiators, based in Halifax. It’s a vintage 4 column one. I’ve got some in my house and like I’ve said before, they give out so much heat.
I’d love to know what you think! Let me know in the comments.
