New Build Girl’s Room - Final Reveal
As my first final reveal of the year, I’m excited to show you a girl’s room that I designed for some lovely clients at a new build in Lightcliffe near Halifax. We’ve been gradually working our way through this house over the last couple of years (just the master bedroom to finish off now), and this was one of the first rooms I designed. Although I provided the interior design schemes for each room, the clients project managed the implementation themselves to save on costs. The results are so successful because they did a fantastic job and followed the design schemes to the letter - well done clients!
Before
The initial consultation took place as soon as the clients had moved into their new home. Their son initially moved into this room but he’s littler and has less stuff so we decided to move him to the smaller room next door. The only thing that was staying in this room was the carpet.
Interior Design Scheme
The little girl was 7 at the time so we wanted to make sure that the scheme grew with her. I generally find that children are ready for a room refresh at about 6 or 7, and again at about 12 or 13. I also wanted to make sure that the colour scheme here and in the boy's room coordinated with each other.
Being a new build, the ceilings in this house aren’t very high. We wanted a light colour scheme but we were also keen to inject some colour so we decided on half painted walls. Farrow and Ball’s Teresa’s Green is a pretty mint green that doesn’t feel too cold, and we chose Wimborne White, a soft warm white, for the top half of the walls and ceiling (both colour matched by Dulux). Half painted walls are a great way of making ceilings feel higher because they blur the line between wall and ceiling. We didn’t need to incorporate toy storage in here because there’s a separate playroom, which I’ll show you in a later room reveal.
After
I would have loved a room like this when I was little! The canopy over the bed adds a lovely fairytale feel. The duvet cover is the Majari from La Redoute and it picks out the pink and yellow in the Dunelm cushions perfectly. The bed frame was the Habitat Fleur model, which is now sold as an Argos Home one. Because there are no sockets at this side of the room, I sourced a cordless, battery operated bedside lamp.
Although we didn’t need space for toys, storage is always useful in kids’ rooms so I added some storage cases for small items. There’s room for all clothing in the wardrobe so we didn’t need a separate chest of drawers which would have taken up too much space.
We added warmth with the gold star garland, and the rattan pendant shade which I sourced from Dunelm.
